ASTM A53 CARBON STEEL PIPE
Technical Information View All Pipe
ASTM A53 pipe is a carbon steel alloy pipe suitable for welding, bending, and flanging. The ASTM A53 specification covers seamless, welded, black, and hot-dipped galvanized pipe, which is used in a wide range of applications, including but not limited to: refineries, compressor stations, natural gas transmission, steam conduction, and generator plants.
MSI Supply is a Pipe Distributor in Houston, TX that provides A53 pipe from 1/2" to 48" in diameter. A53 pipe comes in both single (~20 ft) and double (~40 ft) random lengths. MSI also offers a number of different manufacturers for its A53 pipe. A list of a few of these manfacturers, along with some technical specifications for A53 pipe, can be seen below.

A53 Pipe Manufacturing Considerations
General
ASTM A53 pipe is sized according to the nominal pipe size (NPS) system. It is commonly available with national pipe thread ends or with plain cut ends. The steel for both seamless and welded pipe are derived from one or more of the following processes: open-hearth, electric furnace, or basic-oxygen. The weld seam of electric-resistance welded pipe in Grade B shall be heat treated after welding to a minimum of 1000 °F [540 °C] so that no untempered martensite remains, or otherwise processed in such a manner that no untempered martensite remains.
Wall Thickness (and Weight)
- Wall thickness: The minimum wall thickness at any point shall not be more than 12.5% under the nominal wall thickness specified.
- Weights per foot are plus or minus 10%
Diameter
Outside diameter: Outside diameter at any point shall not vary from standard specified more than:
NPS | Over | Under |
1-1/2 and smaller | +1/64” | -1/64” |
2 and larger | 1% | -1% |
Length
A53 seamless and welded steel pipe is produced in random lengths 16’ – 22’ or 32’ – 44’
Galvanizing
Weight of hot-dipped galvanized coating shall not average more than 1.8 oz. per square foot and not less than 1.6 oz. per square foot.
Marking Requirements
Manufacturer may choose to apply stamp via: rolled, die-stamped, ink-printed, or stenciled. Marking shall include: manufacturer’s name, brand, or trademark, in addition to the size, wall, and steel grade.
A53 Pipe Types and Grades
There are three types and two grades available for ASTM A53 pipe.
Type | Description | Grades Available |
Type E | Longitudinally Electric Resistance Welded | Grade A & Grade B |
Type F | Furnace Butt Weld, Continuous Weld (Not Intended for Flanging) | Grade A |
Type S | Seamless | Grade A (preferred for cold bending) & Grade B |
Mechanical Properties (Seamless & ERW)
Grade A | Grade B | |
Minimum Tensile Strength (PSI) | 48,000 | 60,000 |
Yield Strength (PSI) | 30,000 | 35,000 |
Chemical Requirements (Seamless & ERW)
Grade A | Grade B | |
Carbon (max %) | 0.25 | 0.3 |
Manganese (max %) | 0.95 | 1.2 |
Phosphorous (max %) | 0.05 | 0.05 |
Sulfur (max %) | 0.045 | 0.045 |
Copper (max %) | 0.4 | 0.4 |
Nickel (max %) | 0.4 | 0.4 |
Chromium (max %) | 0.4 | 0.4 |
Molybdenum (max %) | 0.15 | 0.15 |
Vanadium (max %) | 0.08 | 0.08 |
A53 Pipe Testing Requirements
Hydrostatic Tests:
Hydrostatic pressure is maintained for a minimum of five seconds for all sizes of seamless and welded A53 pipe.
Mechanical Tests:
- Tensile Test: Two transverse tests required on the ERW for NPS 8 and larger, one across the weld and one opposite the weld.
- Flattening Test: On ERW for NPS 2 and larger, STD and XH wall (not required for XXH pipe).
- Bending Test (cold): For NPS 2 and under, XH wall and under; for NPS 1-1/4 and under, XXH wall
Number of Tests Required
- Seamless and Electric-Resistance-Welded — Bending, flattening, tensile on one length of pipe from each lot of 500 lengths or less of a size.
- Continuous-Weld — Bending, flattening, tensile
