Without defining in any techincal terms, A flange is an external or internal ridge, or rim (lip), for strength, as the flange of an iron beam such as an I-beam or a T-beam; or for attachment to another object, as the flange on the end of a pipe, steam cylinder, etc., or on the lens mount of a camera; or for a flange of a rail car or tram wheel. Thus flanged wheels are wheels with a flange on one side to keep the wheels from running off the rails. The term "flange" is also used for a kind of tool used to form flanges. Pipes with flanges can be assembled and disassembled easily.

Pipe Flanges

Flanges are used to join two joints of pipe.  Each connecting piece of pipe has installed flanges that bolt together with stud bolts and seal with a gasket. MSI is a full-line distributor of flanges, offering carbon steel, stainless steel, and exotic alloys. With sizes ranging from 1/4” to 48", MSI can provide the flanges required for virturally any piping project.

Materials for Flanges

  • Pipe flanges are mass-produced in all the dissimilar materials like stainless steel, cast iron, aluminium, brass, bronze, plastic etc. but the most used material is forged carbon steel and have machined surfaces.
  • In addition, flanges, like fittings and pipes, for specific purposes sometimes internally equipped with layers of materials of a completely different quality as the flanges themselves, which are "lined flanges".
  • The material of a flange, is basically set during the choice of the pipe, in most cases, a flange is of the same material as the pipe.
  • All flanges, discussed on this website fall under the ASME en ASTM standards, unless otherwise indicated. ASME B16.5 describes dimensions, dimensional tolerances etc. and ASTM the different material qualities.

Carbon & Stainless Flanges

  • Standard Carbon Steel Flanges (A105): ASTM A105 is an ASTM specification dealing with forged carbon steel piping components
  • Stainless Steel Flanges (A182): This specification covers forged or rolled alloy and stainless steel (304, 304L, 316L) flanges. This spec also covers other alloys including chrome (i.e. A182 F11)
  • High Yield Flanges (A694): ASTM A694 is the standard specification to cover carbon and alloy steel forgings for pipe flanges, fitting, valves and other parts for high-pressure transmission service.  Applications include, but are not limited to, in wellhead and Christmas-tree manifold equipment in oil and gas industry.  The two numbers in each grade indicate the yield strength requirements, in ksi.
  • Low-Temp Flanges (A350): This specification covers several grades of carbon and low alloy steel forged or ring-rolled flanges (LF2 in low-temp applications).
